Platelet-rich plasma therapy to stimulate scalp growth

In recent years, doctors have realised that the body has the ability to heal itself.

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is a form of regenerative medicine that can harness these abilities and increase the natural growth factors your body uses to heal tissue.

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

Human blood is made up of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, which are often linked to their ability to clot blood.

But platelets do much more than clot blood; are full of growth factorswhich will help with treatment, when you're injured.

In PRP, your doctor takes a vial or so of your blood and puts it in a rotating centrifuge, which separates the platelets and your plasma from the rest of your blood.

The doctor takes this plasma, which contains five to ten times more platelets as normal blood, and inject it into the treatment area.

PRP takes effect immediately and with the help of its growth factors rebuilds your damaged tissue and attracts other healing agents to it.

With PRP injections, your body's natural healing process is enhanced with your own blood components, which regenerate your tissues and speed up your recovery.

How the PRP works

The main purpose of injecting platelet-rich plasma is to speed up healing where healing has not taken place, and to speed up healing, as in the case of an acute injury.

Platelets release more than 30 bioactive proteins and growth factors that promote tissue regeneration and healing. Growth factors activate several types of cells, necessary for tissue healing. Also stimulate protein production, necessary for regenerative processes, including the formation of new blood vessels.

The proteins released signal several types of healing cells to migrate to the area of injury and promote healing by growing new tissue.

PRP therapy procedure

The procedure starts by drawing blood from the patient as in a normal blood draw.

The sample is then placed in a special centrifugewhich separates the blood into layers. Within minutes, a portion of the PRP blood containing platelets, cytokines and growth factors is secreted into a syringe for injection at the site of the injury or the area of the body being treated. The separated part of the PRP blood contains more platelets than normal blood.

This platelet-rich plasma is then injected directly into the wounded or diseased body tissue, where it is growth factors are released and stimulate the production of reparative cells.

What is the purpose of the PRP?

Hair loss (alopecia) & growth promotion after transplantation

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy is effective in treating hair loss by providing your hair follicles with more nutrients to speed up the healing process.

Platelet concentrations in an injection, made up of blood cells responsible for wound healing and tissue repair, accelerate cell growth and collagen production. PRP also opens up the blood vessels around the hair follicles so they will have a better blood supply and receive more nutrients and oxygen from the body.

In the case of hair transplantation, these platelet-derived growth factors will be preserved and increase the viability of hair follicles, speed up healing time and stimulate maximum hair growth.

Am I a good candidate for the PRP?

Because PRP has no risk of rejection and is associated with minimal side effects, it is often recommended for patients who are unsuccessful with traditional options such as physiotherapy, over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs or steroid injections.

PRP can also be chosen when you are trying to delay (or even prevent) surgical procedures such as joint replacements.

However, having a medical condition that can be treated with PRP is not enough for the therapy to make sense. We like to see PRP candidates with characteristics such as:

  • early to medium degeneration
  • general good health
  • interference with daily life due to pain or lack of mobility
  • failure of more conservative treatment methods
  • Non-smokers: PRP therapy may be less effective in smokers, as smoking can interfere with the body's ability to heal and repair tissue.

PRP also has a greater effect on younger patients than on older ones. This does not mean that PRP is ineffective in older patients, but that younger patients respond better to treatment.

PRP is not for everyone

PRP is not recommended for patients with severe anaemia, low platelet count, abnormal platelet function, active systemic infection or those with active cancer. It is not recommended for the following:

  • Anyone with cancer (such as prostate cancer or breast cancer) who has not been in remission for at least 5 years
  • Infection at the injection site
  • Pregnant women
  • Certain other malignancies or blood-borne diseases currently under treatment
  • Any topical infection
  • Patients with multiple health problems may not be good candidates
  • Patients using an anticoagulant may receive PRP with prior consultation with a doctor

When you come for a consultation, we will discuss your options and help you choose a treatment plan that is tailored to you.

Preparing for therapy

Following these guidelines before PRP therapy will ensure that your treatment goes as planned and increase your chances of an optimal outcome.

A week earlier: Do not take ibuprofen, aspirin or NSAIDs. Stop taking all anticoagulant drugs. Stop using herbs, supplements or vitamins associated with blood thinning. If you have any concerns about certain medicines or supplements you are taking, consult your doctor.
The day before: Drink plenty of water, eat well and get a good night's sleep.
The day before: Stay hydrated and eat a nutritious, wholesome meal.

Recovery

There is very little recovery after injection of platelet-rich plasma or stem cells; You can even return to work the same day.

However, it is advisable to rest and take it easy for a few days after the procedure. Follow these tips to ensure that the treatment goes well and that you have optimal results from the procedure:

  • Do not touch, rub or massage the puncture site for at least eight hours.
  • Do not bathe, shower or swim for eight hours after the procedure.
  • Do not take any medicines, vitamins or supplements unless authorised by your doctor. This includes dietary supplements, herbs, painkillers and even cannabis and CBD for a week after treatment.
  • Avoid applying ice or heat to the injection site for 3 days after injection.
  • Do not apply lotions, oils or make-up to the injection site for six hours.
  • Avoid strenuous activity and exercise for three days after the puncture.
  • Do not smoke or consume alcohol for at least three days after the procedure. Both can interfere with the healing process and smoking can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
  • Stay hydrated and eat healthy, nutritious meals.

The injection site may experience tenderness, swelling and redness after the procedure. Bruising may also occur. These symptoms may last for 7-10 days after the procedure.

Doctor's answers to your questions

As the treatment works from the inside out, it can take several weeks or even a few months before you see improvements. The good news is that improvements are likely to continue in the long term as your cells heal the damaged cells themselves.

PRP injection is a low-risk procedure and usually does not cause major side effects. The procedure involves taking blood, so you need to make sure you are hydrated and have eaten to prevent feeling dizzy. After the procedure, there may be some soreness and bruising at the injection site.

To make your PRP treatment as comfortable as possible, we will apply a numbing serum to your scalp. This greatly reduces your discomfort during the procedure, but feel free to speak to our team if you have any concerns or discomfort. After the injections, your scalp may remain numb or tingly, but this is temporary and normal feeling will return soon after you leave our clinic.

Most of our patients visit us at least three times, as PRP is cumulative. If you use the injections for scarring, you will not need to return to the clinic after your last visit, but if your cosmetic problem is related to ageing, you will need regular maintenance treatments.

Although we recommend that you visit us two to three times a year, some patients who take particularly good care of their skin only need treatments every 12 months.

The success rate of PRP injections for hair growth ranges from 70-90%.

For musculoskeletal conditions, the success of PRP can vary greatly from person to person. It depends on the severity of the injury, the part of the body being treated and the individual's response to treatment.

In general, PRP injections should not be considered as a stand-alone therapy. They should be used in conjunction with standard treatments such as physiotherapy, medication and, if necessary, surgery.
