Laser treatment of scars and stretch marks

In laser scar treatment with the Fotona Dynamis SP Pro, the fractional laser creates tiny micro-damages in the skin that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin fibres, which help to repair and rejuvenate the skin.

How is laser scar removal performed?

Our Fotona Dynamis SP laser is very effective in reducing the appearance of scars and stretch marks. It uses the technology of the non-ablative waves of the Nd:YAG laser as well as the fractionated ablative waves of the Er:YAG laser deep in the dermis layer of the skin to trigger the skin's natural healing processes, increase collagen levels and regenerate new, healthy skin cells.

The laser procedure itself usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour, depending on the size and severity of the scars. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the treatment, and recovery time is very short or non-existent.

It is important to note that laser treatment can effectively reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks, but it cannot eliminate them completely. More visits may be needed to achieve optimal results.

What types of scars are reduced with laser?

Removing acne scars

These scars are often the result of severe acne outbreaks that penetrate deeper layers of the skin and severely damage the tissue. The Fotona Er:YAG laser excels in being able to effectively treat these different forms of acne scars.

Laser energy can penetrate deep into the skin to a maximum depth of 2.5 mm and stimulate the remodelling of collagen fibres in the deeper dermis, also known as the reticular dermis.

The laser has a dual benefit for acne scars, including stimulating wound regeneration and increasing fibroblast production, leading to an increase in collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

Keloid scars

Treating keloid scars is a very challenging task, as a keloid scar can react to any trauma (surgical excision, freezing, etc.) by growing even bigger.

One method of using a laser to treat keloid scars is to coagulate the blood vessels that feed the scar. This method can give excellent results if the procedure is very selective to avoid overheating the scar tissue.

The expert use of the fractional laser by our dermatologists allows the scars to better match the structure and appearance of the surrounding skin.

Hypertrophic scars

Hypertrophic scars are slightly less common than keloids and are characterised by raised scar tissue compared to the surrounding skin.

They are usually as a result of burn wounds or other heat damage, but genetics also play a role in who can get them.

These types of scars can be treated with any type of laser - the decision will be based on other factors. These factors include consideration of how much tissue is raised and how large the affected area is.

Stretch marks

Stretch marks are an actual disorder of the dermis of the skin. They occur when the skin is greatly enlarged (e.g. due to rapid weight gain or pregnancy) and the dermis is stretched.

Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body, but are most commonly seen on the abdomen, chest, buttocks, thighs and arms.

The appearance of stretch marks can be improved with several sessions with our Fotona SP Dynamis laser.

Benefits of laser removal

Laser scar treatment has many benefits and can help to correct a wide range of cosmetic problems, eliminate signs of the natural ageing process and improve skin tone and texture.

Compared to other ablative lasers such as the CO2 laser, the Er:YAG laser has comparable cosmetic results with less recovery and fewer side effects such as hyperpigmentation.

With the Er:YAG laser, specific areas of the skin can be treated with fractionated laser technology, allowing a more targeted approach to treatment, while leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed. Studies have shown that this also reduces recovery time, allowing for fewer side effects.

  • Highly accurate, targeted selective treatment
  • Minimal residual thermal damage to underlying tissue
  • Less invasive than dermabrasion and chemical peels
  • Short resting time.
  • Save time

Frequently asked questions

How many therapies do I need?

The number of treatments needed to remove scars or stretch marks depends on the type of procedure and the severity of the scars.

Some treatments can show improvements after just one treatment, while others require several treatments for optimal results. Our dermatologist will assess your skin before recommending a treatment plan with an estimated number of treatments.

Is laser scar treatment safe?

Treatment of scars and stretch marks is generally safe and effective when carried out by trained professionals. However, individual responses may vary and there may be some risks.

Choosing a reputable clinic and following aftercare instructions are crucial. Our dermatologist will provide you with detailed information on the potential risks and benefits depending on your skin type and treatment modality.

Does the laser hurt?

Our laser is equipped with a cooling system to help reduce discomfort and protect the surrounding tissue. This makes the procedure generally well tolerated, but if you expect discomfort, you can use a topical numbing cream to make sure you are as comfortable as possible at all times.

Are there any side effects?

There are no serious side effects or complications after removal, but some patients may experience redness and inflammation in the treated area, which subsides overnight. Ice packs can be placed on the treatment areas for faster recovery and better well-being.
