About the procedure
The Fotona StarWalker laser is one of the best and most advanced tattoo removal lasers in the world. It operates on the principle of FracTat technology, which shatters the pigment into tiny particles that the body then naturally eliminates. It can be used to remove almost all coloured tattoos, with minimal risk of scarring.
We won't say it is completely painless, but it is definitely worth the short-term discomfort. If you endured the tattooing process, you will easily get through its removal too. Our team will explain every step during the procedure, look after your comfort and closely monitor the healing of your skin. The past may not be erasable, but nowadays tattoos fortunately are.
How does it work?
With modern tattoo removal methods, it is not just a case of ‘blasting’ the ink away; it is a precise process in which the pigment is broken down into tiny particles that the body then removes naturally. The Fotona StarWalker operates using exceptionally short and powerful light pulses that travel deep into the skin, “shattering” the ink into microscopic particles without damaging the upper layers of the skin.
It is an exceptionally advanced system that combines the power of Q-switched lasers and the precision of pico-nano lasers. The laser emits extremely short pulses of light, lasting only 5 nanoseconds, within which lies a sequence of even shorter micro-pulses, lasting only trillionths of a second (picoseconds). This means that the laser releases a huge amount of energy in a very short time, which mechanically breaks up the pigment (tattoo ink or skin melanin) into tiny particles without damaging the surrounding tissue. Because it is therefore a mechanical action of light rather than thermal, which makes the procedure very precise and safe.
StarWalker also uses the patented MaQX (Modulated Acoustics Q-Switched) system, which combines all types of ultrashort laser pulses in a single device. This means that we can adjust the power and action depth of the laser to suit your unique tattoo, whether it is old black ink, light green, or stubborn blue shades, which older lasers were often unable to remove.
But the most important thing about this laser is the FracTAT technology, which enables gentler “shattering” of the pigment without excessive heating of the skin. The result is faster healing, less redness and a lower risk of scarring.
Why is FracTAT technology better than other lasers?
While older lasers removed tattoos mainly from the surface of the skin, Fotona FracTAT goes much deeper, in a clever, safe and effective way.
FracTAT uses fractional laser technology, which creates tiny microscopic holes in the dermis—the middle layer of the skin—through which the pulses can also reach deeper layers of pigment.
In addition, these channels represent a solution to the so-called ‘frosting effect’, which occurs when gases and water vapour are released during pigment breakdown and become trapped just beneath the skin's surface, turning the skin white for a moment.
Too many trapped gases and bubbles place a greater strain on the skin, cause an unpleasant feeling of tightness or a burning sensation, and can even hinder the effectiveness of the laser in the future, as the bubbles partially prevent the light from penetrating deeper into the skin.
Less ‘frosting effect’ therefore means greater efficacy, less irritation and faster recovery.
It is also better than other lasers due to:
- Quick actions, which reduces the number of treatments required;
- Of more even paint removal due to the combination of 4 wavelengths;
- Fewer scars to stimulate the natural production of collagen;
- Healing of scars or skin discoloration caused by improper tattoo removal in the past;
- Do not heat the skin, as it does not work by heat, but mechanically.

How do I prepare for the procedure?
In principle, no special preparation is required for the laser treatment with the Fotona StarWalker, but it is advisable to follow the general advice prior to laser treatment:
- Avoid the sun and sunbeds to reduce the risk of potential pigmentation changes.
- Stop using products containing retinoids, acids or strong exfoliants a few days before the treatment., as they can make your skin more sensitive to light.
- If the tattoo is on a hairy part of the body, you can shave the area, but avoid waxing and hair removal creams, as they can cause micro-abrasions to the skin.
- Drink plenty of water and make sure your skin is moisturised, as well-hydrated skin tolerates laser energy better and regenerates more quickly after the procedure.
- On the day of the treatment, do not apply lotions, make-up or deodorants. onto the area we will be treating.
With clean and rested skin, the results will be even better and the procedure more pleasant.

How many visits do I need?
Every tattoo has its own story, every individual their own skin type, and thus every tattoo its own fading pace.
Most people need between 4 and 8 treatments spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart. How many treatments will be necessary depends on the size of the tattoo, the colour and depth of the ink, the area of the body, and the quality of the tattoo itself.
Amateur tattoos are usually shallower and have less pigment, making them easier to remove, whereas professional ones contain multiple layers and various colour pigments, which can require more visits.
The number of visits will also depend on your wishes; if you want the tattoo completely removed, a few more visits might be necessary. After each treatment, you will be able to observe the gradual fading of the tattoo.

For complete tattoo removal, it is usually necessary multiple visits spaced 4–6 weeks apart, depending on the pigment, colours and age of the tattoo:

Is laser tattoo removal dangerous?
The procedure is a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment. It is clinically proven to be safe for all skin types, which is why Fotona laser treatments require minimal to zero recovery time.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effects of laser tattoo removal are temporary redness, scabs, blisters and temporary lightening or darkening of the surrounding skin. Although some of these symptoms may sound concerning, they are completely normal and disappear over time. In fact, all these side effects are the body's natural response to the procedure and are a sign that your skin is healing and that the tattoo removal was effective.
Is it possible to tattoo over a laser-removed tattoo?
Of course! However, you must not cover removed tattoos immediately after removal. A healing period of at least 6 weeks is recommended before applying new ink to the area where the previous tattoo was removed. This time frame is also left to the discretion of your tattoo artist.
Will laser tattoo removal leave scars?
No, FracTat™ technology reduces the risk of scarring as it allows gases and ink particles to escape more easily, thereby reducing the risk of the “frosting” effect (whitened skin), which can cause scarring.
