Arrythmologist
Our hearts often send us signals that we easily attribute to stress, fatigue or a fast-paced lifestyle.
As long as the fluttering, skipping and irregular pulse keep recurring, it is important to have them checked by a professional.
In the rhythm clinic, a modern diagnostic approach, a clear explanation of test results and an individual plan for further treatment await you.
When the heart loses its rhythm
Every heart has its own precisely coordinated electrical system that determines when and how fast it should beat. When this system breaks down, heart rhythm disorders, or arrhythmias, occur. Electrical signals can travel too slowly, too quickly, along the wrong pathway, or originate in places where they normally should not. This can be felt as a pounding heart, skipped beats, an irregular rhythm, dizziness, or fatigue, and sometimes an arrhythmia occurs completely silently and we are not even aware of it.
Arrhythmias are not always a sign of a dangerous disease. They can often be triggered by fatigue, stress, caffeine, alcohol, certain medications, an electrolyte imbalance or other temporary conditions.
Nevertheless, it makes sense to take them seriously, as some rhythm disorders affect the effective blood circulation of the body, reduce the quality of life or increase risk of more serious cardiovascular complications.
Therefore, if the above-mentioned symptoms appear, a specialist cardiological or arrhythmological assessment is recommended.
Some arrhythmias are harmless, whereas others can be fatal. Therefore, early arrhythmological management is crucial.
Are heart rhythm disorders dangerous?
Not all heart rhythm disorders are equally dangerous. Some can be unpleasant but less threatening, while others require prompt recognition and immediate treatment.
Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder, in which the upper chambers of the heart, the atria, beat rapidly and irregularly. On its own, it is usually not directly life-threatening, but it is not harmless: it can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other complications.
Particularly dangerous are rhythm disturbances originating from the lower chambers of the heart, the ventricles. These include ventricular tachycardia and above all ventricular fibrillation, in which the heart does not pump blood effectively and can lead to cardiac arrest within minutes without immediate action.
It is not only overly fast rhythms that are dangerous. Also bradycardia Can it be serious when the heart cannot supply enough blood and oxygen to the body due to a slow pulse.
Symptoms we must not ignore
Arrhythmias have several faces, from the sensation of a skipped heartbeat to fainting. Because symptoms can be mild, intermittent, or easily attributed to stress, it is important to listen to them and have them checked by a specialist in good time.
It makes sense to visit an arithmologist in the event of:
- Recurrent palpitations;
- Sudden episodes of rapid heartbeat;
- Unexplained dizziness and fainting spells;
- Reduced physical performance;
- Heavy breathing;
- Chest pain
- Weakness and fatigue.

Step-by-step overview
The rhythmologist will ask you about your symptoms, when they occur and how long they last, associated medical conditions, medications, lifestyle, stress, caffeine or alcohol consumption, and a family history of heart disease.
The doctor will listen to the heart, check the pulse, measure the blood pressure and assess any signs of rhythm disturbance or other cardiovascular problems.
Based on the consultation and examination, the doctor will decide which tests are most appropriate for you.
An ECG shows the heart rhythm at the moment of the recording. If problems occur occasionally, Holter monitoring may be suggested, which monitors the rhythm for 24 to 48 hours or longer. If necessary, an echocardiogram is also performed, which shows the structure of the heart, the function of the heart muscle and the valves.
If initial investigations do not explain the problems, an arrhythmologist may suggest further diagnostics, such as laboratory tests or exercise testing.
Once the test results are gathered, an arrhythmia specialist will explain what kind of rhythm disorder it is. For some, monitoring is sufficient, while others require medication or further investigations.
The aim of the review is for you to get a clear explanation of your condition, a risk assessment and a plan tailored to your heart, symptoms and lifestyle. For some arrhythmias, protection against blood clots is introduced, while others require additional procedures, such as cardioversion, catheter ablation or the insertion of a pacemaker.
Some medicines and dietary supplements can also affect your heart rhythm, so it is important that you mention them to your doctor.

Frequently asked questions
What should I bring to the arrhythmology appointment?
Please bring all previous cardiology reports and any discharge letters. Previous ECGs, Holter monitoring reports, echocardiograms and laboratory test results are crucial. Prepare a list of all medications and dietary supplements you are taking. Accurately identify all symptoms you are experiencing. It is useful to write down when the problems occur, how long they last, what triggers them, and whether they are accompanied by chest pain, dizziness, shortness of breath or fainting.
Is every skipped heartbeat dangerous?
No. Heart palpitations can be due to premature beats, stress, fatigue, or caffeine. If the problems recur and their intensity increases, an examination by an arrhythmologist is advisable.
When is it necessary to go to A&E for arrhythmia?
Emergency medical attention must be sought in the event of chest pain, fainting, severe shortness of breath, sudden severe weakness, severe dizziness or the feeling that you are going to lose consciousness.
Is an ECG enough to diagnose an arrhythmia?
Not always. An ECG shows the heart rhythm at the moment of the recording. If the arrhythmia occurs intermittently, the ECG may be normal, so in such cases Holter monitoring is often necessary, which monitors the rhythm over a longer period. You wear the recording device continuously for 24 to 48 hours while carrying out all your everyday activities.
Is atrial fibrillation dangerous?
Atrial fibrillation is not usually directly life-threatening, but it is a serious rhythm disorder because it can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other complications.
Can children have arrhythmias?
Yes. Children can have various rhythm disorders, ranging from transient to more serious ones. In children, one should watch out for palpitations, dizziness, fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, and in infants also for paleness, restlessness, poor feeding, or rapid breathing.
