Checks and tests in pregnancy

Pregnancy check-ups are an integral part of a pregnant woman's life throughout her pregnancy.

For most pregnant women, these are happy moments, a time of sweet anticipation before every antenatal check-up, when they can use our technology to get an impression of the actual state of growth and development of the foetus and, above all, to get confirmation that everything is fine with the baby.

First check-up in pregnancy

Now that you know you are pregnant, you probably have a lot of questions to ask your gynaecologist. The first examination in pregnancy is the most detailed and the longest. You will have the opportunity to get many answers from us. When you make an appointment for your first check-up with us, be prepared for the questions you will ask us. You will also have other questions before your first antenatal check-up and any follow-up examinations. We strongly advise you to write down the questions you will ask your gynaecologist at your next check-up.

Follow-up examinations in pregnancy

In the follow-up of pregnancy, our attention is focused on the following most common complications:

  • Recognising signs of preterm birth, fetal growth arrest or accelerated growth
  • Monitor blood pressure and treat elevated levels in time
  • Detection of gestational diabetes mellitus with an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy
  • Monitoring the occurrence of exacerbations or complications of chronic diseases with which the mother entered pregnancy
  • Advice on changes in the body that have already happened or are about to happen, to reduce any fear and discomfort

The aim of prenatal diagnosis is - in addition to better preparation for the birth of the baby - to take appropriate measures to optimise the quality of life of the whole family.

Quality of life can be significantly improved for some health conditions if they are detected in time.

What is done in each check?

Checks are not just growth monitoring

Pregnancy checkups should never be just about monitoring your baby's growth. Every new change that a pregnant woman notices, every dilemma that arises, she must communicate and resolve with her gynaecologist, but what is essential for a pregnant woman is the calm that must be present every time she goes home - even when everything is not going well. The general psycho-physical well-being of a pregnant woman is an optimal prerequisite for good growth and development of the baby, while excessive stress and maternal worry affect the psychological state and development of the baby.

Prenatal tests - NIFTY

NIFTY is a non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT = "Non Invasive Prenatal Test") used for the early detection of fetal chromosomal abnormalities. With this simple and safe blood test, which is extremely accurate and provides highly reliable results, every pregnant woman can avoid the risk of an invasive and uncomfortable amniocentesis.
The standard NIFTY panel detects trisomies of chromosomes 21, 18 and 13 (Down, Edwards and Patau syndromes) and sex chromosome disorders (trisomy X, Jacobs, Klinefelter and Turner syndromes).
The sex of the foetus can also be determined at the request of the pregnant woman and is included in the price of the test.

Gynaecological ultrasound

Real-time ultrasound is the most common technique for monitoring the development of pregnancy. Ultrasound is the only way to analyse fetal vitality throughout pregnancy.
It provides information on the number of fetuses, duration of pregnancy, date of delivery, fetal position, assesses the presence of congenital anomalies, fetal size and movement, heart rate, placental development and position, amount of amniotic fluid, stability of fetal circulation and exchange of blood flow between the fetus, mother and placenta. Ultrasound waves are sent through the probe, bouncing off obstacles, and the shape and distance of the body from the probe are determined by the time of return. The reflected ultrasound wave is converted into electrical pulses that generate an image on the screen. In this way, the growth and development of the entire pregnancy is monitored in the mother's abdomen.

What are the reasons for a gynaecological ultrasound?

Gynaecological ultrasound is performed to measure and assess the condition of the female pelvic organs.
That way it can be inspected:
  • Size, shape and position of the uterus and ovaries
  • Thickness, echogenicity (darkness or lightness of the image related to tissue density) and presence of fluid or mass in the endometrium, myometrium (muscle tissue of the uterus), fallopian tubes or in or near the bladder
  • Length and thickness of the cervix
