How is the examination with an otorhinolaryngologist?
During an ENT examination of the ear, the specialist will use a special tool called an otoscope to thoroughly inspects the outer canal of your ear and eardrum. It will insert the tip of the otoscope into your ear and illuminate your ear canal, all the way down to your eardrum. He will then rotate the otoscope in all directions to check inside your ear and eardrum. He may also use a pneumatic otoscope, an instrument that has a plastic bulb on the end, to give the eardrum breathed in the air. This causes the eardrum to move and helps your GP check for infection and fluid build-up behind the eardrum.

Every ear ENT starts with a conversation. The doctor asks about pain, tinnitus, vertigo and hearing problems. Earliest ear diseases or a family history of hearing loss may also be important. After the conversation, the first thing that usually happens otoscopy (ear mirror inspection), followed by further investigations if necessary. In the case of hearing problems, medicine distinguishes between disorders in the transmission of sound waves and disorders in the perception of sounds.
