Frequently asked questions
Testing your sense of smell is a diagnostic procedure for assessing the ability to detect, discriminate and identify odours. It is used to detect any impairment or loss of olfactory function.
Sniff testing is necessary, when the sense of smell is suspected to be impaired or lost, but also for the early detection of certain neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease.
During testing the patient is presented with a series of different smells, usually with the help of special test kits. The patient is then asked to identify or describe each smell to assess their olfactory ability.
