How should I prepare for an abdominal ultrasound?

For routine abdominal ultrasound examinations No special preparatory measures are necessary. It is advisable to avoid large meals or high-carbohydrate drinksas under such circumstances the intestines fill with gas and overshadow the other organs, making the examination itself difficult or less representative as the organs are not in their normal state. If you are having an abdominal ultrasound in a doctor's surgery, it is best to wear loose clothingto easily expose the abdomen, including the lower abdomen.

Ultrasound or abdominal examination works on the same principle as any ultrasound examination: the transducer emits ultrasound waves that are reflected back in different ways by different tissue structures. Trebuh is best assessed when the patient is lying relaxed on their back with their legs slightly bent. Ledvice and are often easier to view in the lateral position. When examining liver or spleen the doctor usually asks the patient to take a deep breath and hold it a little to push the organs down through the diaphragm. If anything abnormal is found during the abdominal sonography (ultrasound), such as a tumour or change in tissue structure, the doctor will arrange for further investigations and advise the patient accordingly about further examinations and possible interventions with specialists in other fields of medicine.

In an abdominal ultrasound, a specialist radiologist assesses the size, structure and position of the following abdominal organs and vessels:

In addition, the doctor can use an abdominal probe to detect free fluid in the abdominal cavity, such as inflammatory effusion or blood.

Frequently asked questions

Ultrasound of the abdomen is a diagnostic imaging procedure that uses sound waves to create images of abdominal organs such as the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, prostate, spleen, uterus, lymph nodes, aorta, urinary bladder and pancreas. It helps doctors assess the health and function of these organs, detect abnormalities (anomalies) and diagnose conditions such as liver disease, kidney stones, abdominal pain and more.

During an abdominal ultrasound, a specialist radiologist applies a gel to the abdomen or the part of the abdomen to be examined and uses a transducer to emit sound waves. The transducer captures the echoes of sound waves as they bounce off organs and produces real-time images on a monitor. It is a non-invasive and painless procedure that usually takes about 30 minutes, but can be slightly longer. The time it takes depends on each individual and his/her state of health.

Preparation for an abdominal ultrasound usually involves no special features other than the patient coming in for the test fasting (not eating or drinking for a few hours before the procedure) to ensure clear visualisation of the organs. It is important to follow these instructions to get accurate and representative ultrasound results.
