Leg Vein Ultrasound

Ultrasound of the leg veins is important in detecting the causes of leg problems early and in time.

Preparing for an ultrasound of the leg veins

During the ultrasound examination, the specialist applies ultrasound gel to different parts of the leg (from the groin to the foot). So wear appropriate clothing. Boxer shorts and similar underpants are therefore not suitableas they cover the transparent groin area. Wearing a skirt can also make it difficult to investigateas the patient often has to hold the skirt with at least one hand so that the doctor has a clear enough view of the examination area, which recommends wearing traditional underpants and comfortable clothes that can be easily removed.

What is an ultrasound and how is an ultrasound scan performed?

In medicine, it is ultrasound is widely used It is used for diagnostic purposes, but can also be used for therapeutic purposes (e.g. crushing kidney stones). Use of ultrasound in diagnostic examinations does not harm the human body, research has found no harmful effects on the organism. The test sends high-frequency ultrasound waves into the body, which bounce off the tissues in different ways depending on the density of the tissue. The reflected waves are then received from the body and converted into a live image by a computer connected to the ultrasound machine.

Ultrasound and Leg Vein examinations

During a venous examination, the patient may need to stand on a small step for some time to give the doctor better access to the areas to be examined. This is not necessary, as it all depends on the area of the leg being examined. The examination usually takes up to 30 minutes. During the examination, it may occasionally be necessary for the doctor to briefly apply pressure to the patient's thigh or lower leg with his or her hand to allow the blood in the patient's veins to flow upwards more quickly for a short time. The ultrasound machine can then be used to check whether the veins in the leg are diseased (this can be detected by blood flowing back into the veins in the leg). The main reason for an ultrasound examination of the arteries in the legs is to suspect the presence of a circulatory disorder, for example due to atherosclerosis. The specialist doctor often gets the first signs of the presence of a circulatory disorder from the patient's description of the symptoms. Typically, pain in the leg (buttock, thigh, lower leg and/or foot) after walking a distance with improvement in standing - the so-called "intermittent claudication“.

Frequently asked questions

Leg vein ultrasound, also known as Doppler ultrasound, is a non-invasive and painless imaging test that uses sound waves to create images of veins in the legs. It helps to assess conditions such as deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins or venous insufficiency, and to assess the condition of the arterial vessels. Ultrasound provides detailed information on blood flow, clot formation and any abnormalities in the leg veins.

No, ultrasound of the veins in the legs is painless procedure. The gel is applied to the skin on the feet and the handheld converter gently moves over the area to capture the images. It involves no discomfort or exposure to radiation, making it a safe diagnostic test that is well tolerated.

Leg vein ultrasound is performed to assess various conditions affecting the leg veins. It helps to diagnose deep vein thrombosis, which is the formation of a blood clot, or to assess the extent and severity of varicose veins or venous insufficiency. Ultrasound provides valuable information for diagnosis, treatment planning and monitoring the health of the leg veins.
